About Us

Empowering Children Through Music

We seek to empower children–impacted by war, displacement, genocide, and systemic inequity–with intentionally-designed music education to instill creativity, freedom dreaming (Love, 2019), imagination and hope for a brighter future.

We believe music and education are powerful tools for justice. Our music schools are places designed for children to engage their musical passions, celebrate their musical-cultural identities, and become agents of their own musical futures.

Music and singing have the potential to reach the deepest parts of our being. Music–a connector, healer, a medium by which to transcend the rational and perhaps, even one’s reality–has the potential to uplift, empower and instill hope. It certainly is not a magic potion, but carefully and intentionally implemented, student-centered, music-making spaces have the potential to make a difference in children’s lives. It is our mission to develop and implement these music educational spaces and provide the space and education to empower and transform children’s lives.

Children–impacted by war, displacement, genocide, and disenfranchised by socioeconomic and systemic inequity worldwide–lack hope, agency, and opportunities to dream, create, imagine and believe that they are worthy of a brighter future–that a brighter future is even within their realm of existence.

Our program implements music teaching that embraces the whole child and each child’s individual needs. Each music learning space is a space in which children are encouraged to freely express themselves, authentically, creatively, spiritually, and culturally. Children are guided with musical activities that provide multiple ways for them to explore their creative and musical selves. Musical culture is paramount as are individual musical expression, self-identity, self-esteem, confidence building, reflection, freedom dreaming (Love), and creative-imaginative exploration.

Each music teaching experience is tailored to the needs of the group and evolves as those needs change. Therefore, these music spaces are culturally-affirming, and student-centered. The pedagogy is an inductive music-making approach in which the process unfolds authentically and uniquely for each group. Each group is its own musical tapestry, musical mash-up, musical bricolage–each musical experience is an amalgamation of those involved– each one unique from the others.

The freedom to dream, imagine, create and explore has historically been reserved for the elite. Children from marginalized backgrounds are rarely granted the opportunity to imagine a future beyond the realms of their reality. Musical experiences that foster creativity, imagination and divergent thinking can provide children with the space and tools to dream about a future that may have once seemed impossible. Through music, children are empowered to be agents of their own musical expression and future dreams. Musical exploration and creation allow openings for children to unlock their imaginations, dream about the unimaginable and believe in a brighter future for all. Children are the future, therefore, it is imperative that we empower them and equip them with the confidence and tools to create a future that only they can imagine– one beyond the realm of our understanding–with more ingenuity, possibility and hope– the sounds of hope and the sounds of the future.
